Implant or Bridge? Making the Right Choice

Implant or bridge? We compare the two options for replacing a missing tooth in a clear table: pros and cons, who each suits, the process, cost and FAQs.

A bridge requires the neighboring teeth to be reduced, whereas an implant replaces the missing tooth on its own without touching the surrounding teeth. This makes an implant a more conservative solution in the long term.

By stimulating the jawbone, an implant prevents bone loss and offers chewing comfort closest to that of a natural tooth. With the All-on-4 protocol, an entire jaw can receive fixed teeth in a single day.

We determine exactly which treatment is right for you after 3D tomography and a clinical examination.

Why Should a Missing Tooth Be Treated?

Even the loss of a single tooth leads to a chain of problems over time. The teeth next to the gap begin to tilt, while the opposing teeth start to over-erupt. This causes bite (occlusion) problems, difficulty chewing and jaw-joint pain. In addition, because the jawbone in the gap is no longer stimulated, it begins to shrink, and over time this can lead to a noticeable collapse in the facial contours. For this reason, a missing tooth should be treated as soon as possible — not only for aesthetics but for oral and general health. The two main permanent solutions are the implant and the bridge.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a titanium screw placed into the jawbone that mimics the root of the missing tooth. Once it fuses with the bone (osseointegration), a porcelain crown that looks very close to a natural tooth is placed on top. Because the implant stands on its own without touching the neighboring teeth, it both protects the healthy teeth and, by stimulating the jawbone, prevents the bone loss that would otherwise occur. Titanium is highly biocompatible, so the risk of rejection is very low, and a well-planned implant is one of the most durable tooth-replacement options available. It can be used for anything from a single missing tooth to full edentulism; when several teeth are missing, a few implants can support a bridge, or the entire jaw can be carried by a fixed prosthesis with the All-on-4 / All-on-6 protocol.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a classic method in which the teeth on either side of the gap are reduced and a fixed restoration is placed over them to close the space. It is quicker to complete and requires no surgery, but it does require healthy neighboring teeth to be ground down. Because the bone beneath the bridge is not stimulated, the volume in that area may decrease over time. A bridge is a practical option especially for patients whose neighboring teeth already have large fillings or crowns, who are not suitable for surgery, or who want to finish treatment in a very short time. It is usually made of metal-supported porcelain or fully metal-free zirconium; zirconium transmits light like a natural tooth and gives a more aesthetic result in the front region.

Which One Is Right for You?

As a general rule, an implant is the first choice for patients with sufficient bone volume, good general health and a desire for a long-lasting permanent solution. A bridge may make sense for patients whose neighboring teeth already have large fillings or crowns, who wish to avoid surgery, or who want to complete treatment very quickly. For those missing several teeth, an entire jaw can be given fixed teeth with the All-on-4 / All-on-6 protocols. When aesthetics are a priority, the implant crown can be finished in zirconium.

The Process and Healing

Implant treatment begins with 3D tomography and an examination; the implant is then placed under local anesthesia. Fusion with the bone usually takes 2–4 months, during which temporary solutions are used. Once integration is complete, the permanent crown is fitted. With a bridge, the teeth are prepared, an impression is taken and the bridge is fixed within a few days. For our patients coming from abroad, we usually split implant treatment into two short visits.

Care: How to Maintain Implants and Bridges

The single most important factor for the lifespan of both treatments is regular oral care. Implants should be brushed twice a day just like natural teeth and cleaned with interdental brushes or floss; the health of the gum around the implant is critical for longevity. With bridges, the area under the pontic must be cleaned with special floss (super floss) or an interdental brush, otherwise gum inflammation and odor can develop. In both cases, a check-up and professional cleaning every six months and, when needed, periodontology support are recommended. For patients who clench or grind, a night guard significantly extends the life of the restorations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an implant painful?

Because the procedure is performed under local anesthesia, you feel no pain during it. Mild swelling and tenderness afterward pass within a few days and are easily managed with simple painkillers.

Is an implant longer-lasting?

Yes. With proper care an implant can last for decades and often a lifetime, whereas the average lifespan of a bridge is 8–12 years. This is why an implant is usually a more economical investment in the long run.

How big is the cost difference?

A bridge usually has a lower initial cost, but the long lifespan of an implant balances this out overall. In Antalya, both treatments are around 70% below European prices. We prepare a clear, personalized quote for you during an initial examination.
